How to choose a Shopify SEO and GEO agency

Evaluate Shopify SEO and GEO proposals by platform knowledge, implementation ownership, evidence and measurement—not article quotas or citation guarantees.

A proposal can contain every fashionable acronym and still leave your store unchanged. The useful comparison is more concrete: who investigates the problem, who changes the theme or content, who checks the result and what your team receives at the end? Ask those questions before comparing monthly fees.

Give every candidate the same problem

Describe your catalogue, markets, internal team and main commercial constraint. For example: important collections have weak non-brand visibility, product data differs across channels, or a migration is approaching. Supply the same level of access or evidence to each candidate so you can compare their thinking fairly.

Ask for a small diagnostic rather than free work on the entire store. A strong response identifies what can be concluded from the evidence, what remains uncertain and what additional access would resolve it. A confident revenue forecast without a baseline is not a substitute for that reasoning.

Questions that reveal the delivery approach
AskLook for
How would you investigate duplicate product paths?A check of real canonicals and internal links before blanket changes
How do you handle product schema?Understanding of variants, app conflicts and feed consistency
Who implements the recommendations?Named responsibilities, review process and rollback plan
What does GEO add to this scope?Specific discovery, content and measurement tasks
What will our team own?Access, source files, documentation and maintained assets

Separate deliverables from outcomes

A deliverable is a completed audit, shipped template fix or reviewed collection page. An outcome is improved discovery, qualified traffic or sales. Contracts should make the deliverables concrete while acknowledging that outcomes depend on competition, demand, execution and systems outside the agency's control.

Google's hiring guidance warns against guaranteed first-place rankings and encourages scrutiny of an SEO provider's methods. Apply the same scepticism to guaranteed AI citations or claims of a private route into an assistant's recommendations. Google: choosing an SEO provider

Ask how a reported result was measured. Was it a team member's prior role, an agency engagement, an estimate or a verified client outcome? Those can all provide context, but they are different kinds of evidence. A recognisable logo alone does not tell you which work was performed.

Make the first phase reviewable

  1. Agree the baseline, access requirements and the business question.
  2. Request a ranked backlog with affected pages, owners and acceptance checks.
  3. Choose the first implementation batch and its dependencies.
  4. Schedule a review of shipped changes and remaining blockers.
  5. Specify how learnings alter the next batch rather than locking the team into an arbitrary article quota.

Compare total delivery responsibility when comparing price. An inexpensive audit-only engagement may leave you needing another developer, writer and analyst. A broader retainer may be appropriate if those responsibilities are explicit. Neither format is inherently better; the right one matches the capacity your team already has.

Ask for a measurement plan you can explain

Expect search performance by relevant page group, a record of technical changes and clear attribution limits. If AI visibility is included, ask for the prompt set, observed sources, run conditions and referral measurements. Do not accept a single blended ‘visibility score’ without the underlying definition.

Use this practical benchmark for the audit deliverable: a Shopify audit that ends with fixes.

Put this into practice with Shopify SEO and Shopify GEO.
