Colour, size, material, price and availability filters make a large catalogue easier to shop. Combine them and the number of possible URLs grows quickly. Your store needs a merchandising interface for all those choices; it does not need a search landing page for every combination.

Build a small inventory of real filter states

Start with one busy collection. Apply a single filter, two filters, a sort order and a filter that produces no results. Record the resulting URL, robots access, canonical, page title and whether the product grid is reachable through normal links. Repeat for any filtering app with its own URL format.

Google warns that faceted URL spaces can consume crawling resources on low-value combinations. Its guidance distinguishes combinations you want crawled from those you do not. This is a crawl-management decision, not a reason to remove useful filters from the shopping interface. Google: managing faceted navigation

Promote buying intent into a maintained collection

Consider ‘waterproof daypacks’ versus ‘blue, in stock, price low to high’. The first may describe an enduring need with enough products to compare. The second is a browsing state. Before creating a new collection, check that it has a distinct product selection, sufficient stock, useful guidance and a reason to exist alongside your current categories.

A proposed decision framework
CombinationLikely treatmentReason to review
Durable need with a distinct rangeConsider a curated collectionConfirm demand and avoid an overlapping category
Sort order onlyKeep as a shopping controlIt changes order, not the underlying intent
Several narrow filtersReview crawl controlsMany URLs may contain very few products
Empty or impossible resultPrevent misleading indexable pagesCheck what your theme or app can actually return

Do not publish a category merely because a keyword tool lists a phrase. Assign a merchandising owner and a review date. A collection that immediately becomes empty, or repeats the same products and copy as its parent, creates maintenance work without helping the buyer choose.

Crawling and indexing are separate decisions

Robots.txt controls requests; it is not a reliable removal instruction. A blocked URL may still be known to a search engine. Shopify explicitly distinguishes crawling from indexing in its robots guidance. Review existing indexed URLs before blocking paths whose noindex or canonical directives still need to be read. Shopify: editing robots.txt.liquid

Use an evidence log: sample URL, intended role, current indexed state, proposed control and expected outcome. Preserve Shopify's generated defaults when editing robots.txt.liquid. Test narrow patterns against legitimate product, collection and pagination URLs before release. Avoid a blanket rule that blocks every query parameter simply because it is easy to write.

Check pagination and product discovery

After changing filters, confirm a shopper can still reach products beyond the first screen. Follow pagination and load-more behaviour in the rendered page and inspect the links available to crawlers. A neat category page that hides most of its inventory behind an inaccessible interaction has traded one discovery problem for another.

Once the URL plan is settled, improve the landing pages themselves with our collection-page ranking guide.

Measure the result at the right level

Track the curated collection group separately from parameter URLs. Watch indexed status, relevant queries and visits to those collections, then connect them to actual shopping outcomes. A reduction in discovered filter URLs can be healthy even while the number of indexed pages falls. The useful question is whether valuable pages are easier to discover and buy from.
