Opening a new market changes more than the currency symbol. A shopper needs to know whether an item ships to them, which version is available and what returning it involves. A search engine needs a consistent set of URLs that describes those different experiences. Treat the launch as a small storefront project, not a translation checkbox.
Write down the intended market structure
Create a matrix with one row for each market and language combination. Include its public URL, language, currency, available catalogue, shipping region and owner. Distinguish a language choice from a country choice: German content does not by itself mean the offer is appropriate for Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
Shopify documents automatic hreflang, canonical and sitemap handling for properly configured Markets domains and languages. Inspect what your setup produces before adding a separate international SEO app or manually injecting another set of tags. Shopify: international SEO for Markets ↗
Run a complete local buying journey
- Start at the intended local homepage and navigate to a collection, product and guide.
- Check that each step retains the expected language and market. Note any unexpected jump to the primary storefront.
- Select a variant and confirm local availability, price and delivery information.
- Read the return policy and support instructions in the relevant language. Identify any untranslated app content.
- Switch markets and follow the same journey again, including a product that is unavailable in one region.
Use native review for commercially important copy. Words shoppers use for dimensions, materials, fit or product categories may differ from a literal translation. Have the reviewer explain whether the page helps someone choose, not merely whether every sentence is grammatically correct.
Check the technical output on equivalent pages
| Element | What to compare |
|---|---|
| Canonical | The intended indexable version for that page |
| Language alternatives | Equivalent pages, consistent language-region labels and return references |
| Sitemap | The public URLs expected for published markets and languages |
| Product offer | Visible price, selected currency, inventory and structured data |
| Internal links | Destinations that preserve the intended local journey |
Sample a product and collection in every market rather than checking only homepages. Theme customisations and third-party landing pages may behave differently. If your implementation is headless or spans several independent stores, explicitly document which system owns these signals; do not assume one Shopify configuration coordinates all of them.
Localise the decision, not only the wording
A useful local collection can explain sizing conventions, shipping constraints and product suitability for that audience. Publish only facts you can support. Do not add a local address, local team or local certification simply to look relevant. When the offer is identical, say so clearly instead of manufacturing differences.
If price or stock changes across markets, apply the product-data reconciliation process.
Measure each market independently
Keep a baseline for local landing pages, relevant queries, search visits and completed orders. Review whether searchers reach the correct market before interpreting a conversion change. A fall in one country's conversion rate may reflect unsuitable traffic or a broken currency journey rather than poor translation.
Keep the market matrix with your release checklist. Repeat the journey after changes to domains, translated handles, catalogue availability or localisation apps. The launch is successful when customers can find and understand the local offer, and the technical signals consistently describe that same offer.
