Inventory status is not the same as page status. A product can be unavailable to purchase today while its page remains useful for specifications, restock information or support. Conversely, keeping an obsolete page forever with a disabled button and no explanation may frustrate every visitor it attracts.
Ask merchandising before touching the URL
Find out whether the item is returning, whether only some variants are unavailable and whether a replacement genuinely serves the same need. Record what is known and what is uncertain. SEO should not invent a restock date or call a different product a replacement merely because it is available.
| Situation | Starting point | What the page should explain |
|---|---|---|
| Temporary stockout | Keep the useful product page | Current availability and any confirmed restock information |
| Some variants available | Keep the product and accurate options | Which sizes or colours can actually be purchased |
| Permanent replacement | Evaluate a relevant permanent redirect | Why the destination satisfies the original need |
| Discontinued but still useful | Consider an informative archive | Discontinued status, support and suitable alternatives |
| No useful content or replacement | Allow a genuine missing-page response | A helpful way to continue browsing |
Make temporary stockouts useful
Keep the specifications and imagery available. Explain the status in ordinary language near the purchase controls. If a restock notification is offered, make its purpose clear and test that it records requests. Suggest alternatives with the relevant differences stated: capacity, fit, compatibility or price may prevent them being interchangeable.
Check the selected variant as well as the parent product. A sold-out medium should not inherit an in-stock message from the large. Review the offer in structured data and the submitted feed at the same time as the visible page, using the same market and timestamp.
Use the product-page, schema and feed checklist.
Redirect only when the destination makes sense
A visitor following a link to a specific replacement battery needs the compatible battery, not a generic electronics homepage. Evaluate the destination against that original need. If there is no sufficiently relevant substitute, a useful archive or genuine removal can be more honest than sending everyone elsewhere.
Shopify redirects will not override an active product page. If you choose a redirect, confirm that the source path is eligible and then test the live response and final destination. Do not assume an admin entry alone has changed the customer's journey. Shopify: creating and managing URL redirects ↗
Treat a missing page as a real response
Google handles a genuine 404 or 410 differently from a successful page that merely says the item is missing. Returning a 200 status with an error-like page can produce a soft 404. A custom not-found design still needs the appropriate response. Google: HTTP status codes and crawling ↗
Your not-found page can offer search, useful collections and a clear explanation. That does not mean every missing URL should redirect to a shared not-found address. Test the original URL itself. Also update your own internal links so shoppers are not repeatedly sent to products you deliberately retired.
Put the policy into the catalogue workflow
Assign decisions when products are discontinued, not months later during an SEO audit. Record the old URL, chosen treatment, destination if any and review date. Revisit seasonal products before the next season. Monitor unexpected traffic losses and broken destinations after catalogue changes, while accepting that removing genuinely obsolete pages may appropriately reduce the indexed URL count.
Put this into practice with Shopify SEO and Shopify GEO.
