‘Designed for modern life’ could describe a backpack, a lamp or a water bottle. It gives a shopper no basis for choosing. Start product-content work with the questions that block a purchase: will it fit, will it work with what I own, what is included and what will I need to buy separately?

Build a fact sheet before writing the description

Gather specifications, product manuals, approved claims, warranty information and repeated customer questions. Ask the product owner to mark each fact as verified, conditional or unknown. Unknown information is a research task; it is not a blank for a language model to fill.

Shopify's description guidance calls out specifications, suggested uses and benefits supported by evidence. Use that as a starting point, then adapt the detail to what a buyer in your category actually needs. Shopify product-description guidance

Replace adjectives with decision information

Illustrative rewrites, not claims about a real product
Vague copyA more useful pattern
Spacious and versatileState usable dimensions and the items those dimensions accommodate
Compatible with most devicesName tested models or publish the exact compatibility requirements
Built to lastDescribe materials, care requirements and any documented testing
Perfect for everyoneExplain the intended user and important limitations

Do not replace every expressive sentence with a specification. Brand voice can create interest, while factual information resolves uncertainty. Give each a job. A concise opening can establish the product's purpose; a table and a few well-chosen answers can explain whether it is right for this buyer.

Structure the page around a real choice

  1. Open with the product's purpose and the main reason someone would choose it.
  2. Present dimensions, materials, compatibility and included items with clear labels and units.
  3. Explain the meaningful differences between variants or related products.
  4. Answer a small set of genuine pre-purchase questions, including limitations.
  5. Link to detailed instructions, the relevant collection and commercial policies when they answer the next question.

For a comparison, use the same criteria for each option. Do not call your product the winner on every dimension. If a lighter model sacrifices capacity, say so. A buyer who needs capacity should be able to choose the other model without decoding sales language.

Store repeatable facts where they can be maintained

Shopify metafields can hold specialised product information and connect it to compatible theme sections. They are useful when the same kind of fact appears across a range, such as packed dimensions, care instructions or materials. Shopify product details and metafields

Define the field, unit, owner and validation rule before populating hundreds of products. Decide how missing values should appear. Do not render an empty specification row or substitute a generic claim when a value is unknown. For variant-specific facts, confirm the page updates to the selected option.

Review the content as a shopper and as an editor

Give someone the page and a buying scenario without coaching them. Ask them to identify the suitable option and explain why. Any answer that requires an assumption points to missing information. Then have the product owner review every substantive claim and check that images show the same configuration described by the text.

Publish a small category first and record the changes. Watch relevant queries, customer questions, product engagement and purchase outcomes. AI-answer observations can add another perspective, but no wording template guarantees a citation. The durable improvement is a catalogue that makes accurate choices easier.
